China: Beyond the Great Wall

  China
  • Beijing:
  • Beijing

Dates: Feb.-May and Sept.-Dec

Description: Our experiential education program gives participants a unique and meaningful immersion in Chinese culture through a combination of off-the-beaten-path travel, coursework, language immersion, internships, service projects and home stays. We base our program in a picturesque and sparsely populated monastery town, which is home to both Han and Tibetan populations. Living at the nexus where these two cultures meet, and traveling along the Great Wall, which historically marked the frontiers of Han civilization, we will ask, 'What is China'' 'What is Chinese culture'' and 'How are these definitions and lived by the many peoples of China''

Highlights: Two months living in the small, idyllic town of Xiahe ('shya-huh'), in the southwest corner of China's Gansu province, on the eastern edge of the great Tibetan Plateau. Language study and other courses are supplemented with personally designed Independent Study Projects. Participants also visit and backpack along the Great Wall at many points from the western reaches along the ancient Silk Road to Beijing and all the way to Shanhaiguan, where the Great Wall meets the sea.
