Description:
The Cedarberg is an undiscovered gem and off-the-beaten track. This tour is filled with history and culture - certainly not mainstream. A "must see" in South Africa.
Highlights:
Day 1 Arrive at the Backpackers in the afternoon where you will be welcomed by our friendly staff and your guides for tour. You can spend the afternoon as you please in the Jacuzzi or tanning on the beach. In the evening a traditional South African BBQ will be cooked in front of you on the wood coals. You will spend the night at in 4 star accommodation. Day 2 We have an early start with breakfast at the hostel and a visit to Butterfly World; home to exotic butterflies, monkeys, iguanas, spiders and scorpions. Next we head out to the charming historical town of Tulbagh in the Winelands of Boland. We will take a short tour of the Oude Drostdy Museum, a national monument in which local artists and potters exhibit their work. We stop at a local restaurant for lunch (own expense). After a morning full of culture, it's time for the action and excitement with the "Bum Slide Rock".... wait and see! We sleep over in Ceres where you will enjoy your dinner with a view of the mountains. Day 3 After another early start and a quick breakfast we head out to the Cedarberg Conservancy. Weathered sandstone formations are typical of the Cedarberg. We will have a packed lunch in one of the picnic spots in the reserve and you will have some free time to explore. We head to Cederberg Oasis for a steaming shower, comfortable beds, a cooked meal and the possibility of learning of the constellations of stars in the Southern Hemisphere. Day 4 We head out to the Stadsaal Caves in the Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve. This rugged nature reserve includes the famous Stadsaal rock formations and some excellent examples of San rock art. We will have lunch surrounded by views of these rock formations. Our destination is Gecko Creek, a mountain hideaway bordering the Cedarberg Reserve. Enjoy the solitude and swim and relax in the refreshing saltwater pool. After dinner we gather around the fire-warmed open-air Boma and watch for shooting stars. Day 5 Breakfast is served in the thatched outdoor lapa. Horse riding is optional for those who want to enjoy the rugged scenery on horseback. Those that are interested in taking in the Cedarberg's beauty from the air can enjoy an optional flight. Later, we head off to Algeria Reserve to hike and explore. We make our way to the !Khwa ttu San Cultural Village, having lunch in a picnic spot along the way. Dinner is served at !Khwa ttu around the fire. Day 6 After breakfast you will be given a fascinating insight into the culture, heritage, knowledge and modern-day life of the San of southern Africa. San guides lead the three-hour tour. We will have lunch (own expense) before a visit to an Ostrich farm to view these magnificent flightless birds. We end the tour at in Table View. The afternoon is yours to spend relaxing anyway you please.
