Learn to Dive and Take Part in Jungle Trek in Borneo
Malaysia
Dates: All year
Description:
Put yourself to the test with a tough physical and mental challenge on a Raleigh expedition to Borneo. During your trek you will learn jungle skills to survive one of the most arduous environments on earth and when you finish you will feel confident that you can do and overcome anything. Here is an example of the adventure phase we run in Borneo. Please be aware that this may change and is just a guide to the types of adventure phase you can expect on a Borneo expedition. Trek from Long Pasia for up to 11 - 12 days unsupported; carrying your own supplies and equipment for the duration. The trekking will be across arduous and physically challenging terrain. Teams will camp wild near the trail, ensuring they have a minimal impact on the local surroundings which will include leaving nothing behind. Where necessary teams will assist local guides to upgrade the trail through the dense vegetation since the jungle very quickly grows back across trails. As well as trekking, volunteers will get the chance to scuba dive off Mamutik Island gaining open water, advanced, or rescue PADI courses. In partnership with Borneo Divers and Sabah Parks, Raleigh volunteers spend 4 days doing their PADI Open Water diving qualification followed by 2 days of either reef survey work, an underwater clean up or collecting data (coral condition, fish and invertebrate counts) for the international Reef Check Project. Raleigh is a youth charity that inspires people from all walks of life, nationalities and ages to get out there and rise to the challenges of life on expedition. We run programmes in Borneo, Costa Rica & Nicaragua and India. Our expeditions are a challenging, but extremely rewarding combination of sustainable community, environmental and adventure projects. We run different length gap year expeditions throughout the year to fit your study or work patterns. Choose from our unique 10-week (with 3 and a half and 7-week shorter options) or 5-week expeditions. You will be working with other young people from all around the world, on much needed community projects and environmental projects alongside our volunteer managers (aged 25+) and local skilled workers. Volunteers on a 5-week expedition will embark on a top secret Adventure Challenge which will be over challenging and varying terrain. They will be stretched both mentally and physically to the limit over the final 7 - 10 days of their expedition. Please note diving is not available for volunteers joining a 5-week Borneo expedition.
Highlights:
