Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: All year

Description: Raleigh is a youth charity that inspires people from all walks of life, nationalities and ages to get out there and rise to the challenges of life on expedition. We run programmes in Borneo, Costa Rica & Nicaragua and India. Our expeditions are a challenging, but extremely rewarding combination of sustainable community, environmental and adventure projects.

The adventure phase in Borneo is a tough physical and mental challenge. During the trek volunteers learn jungle skills to survive one of the most arduous environments on earth and when you finish you will feel confident that you can do and overcome anything.

Here are an example of the adventure phase we run in Borneo. Please be aware that this may change and is just a guide to the types of adventure phase you can expect on a Borneo expedition.

Trek from Long Pasia for up to 11 - 12 days unsupported; carrying your own supplies and equipment for the duration. The trekking will be across arduous and physically challenging terrain. Teams will camp wild near the trail, ensuring they have a minimal impact on the local surroundings which will include leaving nothing behind. Where necessary teams will assist local guides to upgrade the trail through the dense vegetation since the jungle very quickly grows back across trails.

As well as trekking, volunteers will get the chance to scuba dive off Mamutik Island gaining open water, advanced, or rescue PADI course's. In partnership with Borneo Divers and Sabah Parks, Raleigh volunteers spend 4 days doing their PADI Open Water diving qualification followed by 2 days of either reef survey work, an underwater clean up or collecting data (coral condition, fish and invertebrate counts) for the international Reef Check Project.

Volunteers on a 5 week expedition will embark on a top secret Adventure Challenge which will be over challenging and varying terrain. They will be stretched both mentally and physically to the limit over the final 7 - 10 days of their expedition. Please note diving is not available for volunteers joining a 5 week Borneo expedition.

Have an Adventure in Borneo - Volunteer with Raleigh

Highlights: *Really challenge yourself by pushing yourself to the limit both physically and mentally

*Learn the importance of team work and develop leadership skills vital for further education and employment as well as the pristine rainforest environment

*Trek through some of Borneo's oldest and most remote rainforests

"Trekking first in Long Pasia really hard, but fantastic place, guides, good experience. Diving was AMAZING and the island was beautiful...probably the hardest thing I will ever do" Joanne Loveridge, venturer, Borneo

"In the trekking you really find out what you are capable of. It was very tough but definitely worth it" Gilles Louwerens, venturer, Borneo

Qualifications: * Venturers must be aged between 17 and 24 and up for a challenge!

* Our expeditions are tough, but enable you to develop key skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, perseverance and leadership, all of which are sought by universities and employers and will help set you apart from the crowd.

* We advise venturers to sign up between 6 and 12 months before the expedition departs, the reason being the earlier you apply the better chance you have of getting your first expedition choice. This also gives you more time to raise funds and you'll benefit from our training workshops.
