Borneo
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Dates: All year
Description:
Raleigh is a youth charity that inspires people from all walks of life, nationalities and ages to get out there and rise to the challenges of life on expedition. We run programmes in Borneo, Costa Rica & Nicaragua and India. Our expeditions are a challenging, but extremely rewarding combination of sustainable community, environmental and adventure projects. Volunteers working on environmental projects in Borneo carry out conservation work in areas not accessible to tourists to increase access to environmental resources, conduct research, or raise awareness. Here are some examples of volunteer projects you may be working on. Please be aware that these may change and are just a guide to the types of environmental projects we work on during a Raleigh Borneo expedition. Imbak Canyon this conservation area widely known as one of the most biodiverse areas in the world and Raleigh has been asked by Yayasan Sabah to help them protect the area. Home to elephants, orangutangs and hundreds of rare bird species, it is a huge privilege to work in this area. Raleigh have been working in Imbak since 2004 and have assisted with the construction of an infrastructure that gives rangers the ability to live and work there. This expeditions group will be working on the foundations of a bridge providing safe access across the river. Sepilok - Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre This is a unique opportunity to work on an exciting new conservation initiative in Borneo . With the Sun Bear numbers decreasing the conservation centre will allow for their rehabilitation. Those that can't be released back into the wild will have the best life possible. Raleigh groups will be supporting the project by helping with the construction of parts of the conservation centre, mainly fencing, enclosures and boardwalks. Raleigh volunteers will be involved in a variety of work to help the bears to be released into their new homes at the start of 2010, this work is most likely to include fence and boardwalk construction and possibly an access bridge.
Highlights:
* Our permanent presence in Borneo means that we know what is needed to really make a positive difference out there. Because of this all of our volunteer projects are sustainable and genuinely needed by the communities we work in. * A unique opportunity to spend time living in the middle of a remote rainforest inaccessible to most tourists. * Learn about the politics of conservation and develop an environmentally founded conscience. I really felt proud of the work we achieved and we all put a lot of effort into the project. It was amazing living in such a beautiful jungle and seeing all the wildlife. Jessica Richards, venture, Borneo
Qualifications:
* Venturers must be aged between 17 and 24 and up for a challenge! * Our expeditions are tough, but enable you to develop key skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, perseverance and leadership, all of which are sought by universities and employers and will help set you apart from the crowd. * We advise venturers to sign up between 6 and 12 months before the expedition departs, the reason being the earlier you apply the better chance you have of getting your first expedition choice. This also gives you more time to raise funds and you'll benefit from our training workshops.
