Term: Summer
Dates: June 4 - July 3 and July 9 - August 7, 2010
Description:
This course offers a systems-ecology perspective, exploring structure, function and dynamics of watershed systems that link the land and the sea. This course specifically investigates surface waters, describing lotic or flowing water systems from their thinnest beginnings in the mountains to the salt-wedge estuaries of their river mouths, and the lentic or 'still' water systems (temporary and permanent pools, ponds, lakes, reservoirs and lagoons) and wetlands, examining the shifts in energetics, morphology and organisms and discussing the global services watershed systems provide. Emphasis is placed on the critical ecological importance of riparian forests, those tree-dominated plant communities along stream and river banks and pond, lake and lagoon shorelines. This intensive two-week field-based course involves classroom, field and laboratory time during which we probe into the ancient-rooted relationship of humans and freshwater systems, examining our dependency and impacts we impose on these vital components of our landscapes. Through field activities, we conduct assessment and monitoring protocols on watershed components, determining the state of health, diagnosing problems and prescribing workable solutions. Each student will join a project team (mapping, water quality, fishes, macroinvertebrates, diatoms, riparian forests) and participate in group planning discussions, help organize equipment, learn field techniques, compile data sheets and contribute to field reports. Recognizing and emphasizing the importance of people in watershed ecology, an in-depth look at community-based conservation touches on watershed ethics and responsibilities of individuals, towns, cities, nations, governments and local to international organizations in watershed conservation and protection issues. It challenges you to get involved!
