Description:
Bolivia is the only country in the Americas under indigenous presidential leadership. This leadership has brought sweeping reforms and greater governmental inclusively to the majority indigenous population. On this trip you will examine both the dynamics of the colonial legacy as well as the strategies being employed in indigenous communities to decolonize and to work for justice. Special emphasis will be placed on learning about Aymara and Quechua history, culture, human rights and resistance to assimilation. In addition, you will focus on the challenges to building peace, democracy and autonomy for the indigenous majority in Bolivia. Led by Fidel Xinico, a Guatemalan citizen of the Cakchiquel Maya ethnic group and by Roxanne Gould whose tribal affiliations are with the Grand Traverse and Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa and Ojibwe.
Highlights:
- Spend a day in an Aymara indigenous community and learn about their cultural approach to education, spirituality and development - Visit a coca plantation - Learn different political parties' views on the topics of education and development - Participate in an Aymaran ritual or ceremony - Visit the Ancient Indigenous ceremonial site of Tiahuanacu - Visit an Indigenous school to learn about efforts to preserve language, culture and decolonize the minds of young people - Meet with Business Association Members about their view of President Morales and his policies - Take a trip to Lake Titicaca

This includes pre- and post-trip resource materials, in-country programming, language interpretation, honoraria for local resource people, all meals and lodging, ground transportation, fees for activities included in the program, and round trip international airfare from Minneapolis/St. Paul to Bolivia (price may vary if you are traveling from another location).The program price does not include passport and visa application fees (currently set at USD 135) or entry taxes. Some taxes may be included in your airfare.
