Dates: Please contact us for start dates.
Description:
This is a three-and-a-half week expedition that gives you an up close and personal view of Zimbabwe's stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, and gives you the chance to get involved with high-impact conservation initiatives. It's a unique programme that draws on the services of experienced project managers and professional guides to enable you to make a significant contribution towards wildlife conservation and research objectives across Africa. Gain an in-depth knowledge of the African bush and cultures through the Zambezi River Exploration, with nights spent camping on its banks and islands. In the daytime, you'll paddle along its waterways towards Victoria Falls, spotting wildlife along the way. In your second week, you'll take part in an exciting Bush Survival Course, which will introduce you to the true African bush and give you a deeper understanding of the fragile relationships between man and beast. Spend time in Hwange National Park, walking with lions and helping with the lion breeding and rehabilitation programme, before getting involved with the black rhino and elephant conservation project. Again, you'll be able to observe these fascinating species close up and carry out work to help protect them from extinction.
Highlights:
Week 1: Zambezi River Canoe Expedition As you pioneer your way down the Mighty Zambezi River in a canoe, your days will be busied with various exhilarating team oriented tasks as well as breathtaking sightings of elephants, crocodiles, hippos and a plethora of other wildlife. Your evenings will be spent around the campfire enjoying the delight of the wild African night. Your river challenges will include the use of compasses, maps and various navigational tools to enable your team to find their way to the next stop-off point. Week 2: Hwange National Park As a volunteer, you and your team will have access to the most remote areas of one of Africa's premier game reserves and its surrounding areas, where there are huge herds of elephant, buffalo, plains-game, lion and leopard. You will be helping to protect and conserve one of Africa's few remaining wildlife sanctuaries. You will work directly with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife in their conservation efforts, working inside the Hwange National Park and maintaining conservation areas bordering the area. Weeks 3 and 4: Black Rhino and Elephant Conservation Project Your time at this project will be divided into spending time with the elephants and working with the rhinos. There will also be an opportunity to work within the local community at the small school, located close to the project. For those of you who wish to study and gain vital training in conservation, there are a wide variety of projects available and due to the semi habituation of the large mammals, they are very easy to study.
