Description:
This fascinating and unusual work experience placement enables you to take a peek behind the scenes of a magazine or newspaper and get an insiders perspective on the Chinese media. We work at a number of publications in Beijing, which means that you can choose an area of journalism specific to your interests. Journalism in dynamic Beijing. Choose between a Tourism or Business Magazine or Photojournalism and more... Fantastic experience, whether you're already in journalism or are looking for a step up on the ladder... WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT: --> Skills in writing, editing, general journalism and interview techniques --> An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into the Orient and Chinese culture. --> New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development. --> An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market --> And best of all ... an unforgettable experience! YOUR PROJECT: At all the publications, your working days will be spent covering local events, finding newsworthy stories, attending press rounds, conducting interviews with distinguished visitors from abroad or local celebrities, or talking to everyday locals to ascertain their views on a range of subjects and then writing up and editing articles. Other areas of work will include proof-reading and editing articles, possibly contributing to layout ideas, and just generally helping whenever and wherever your assistance is required. Volunteers also have the opportunity to get involved with the photography side of journalism. TOURISM MAGAZINE - This project involves researching and writing for a Chinese tourism magazine, which is published in both Chinese and English. If you work at this magazine, you will most likely have the opportunity for all expenses paid trips around China to research and write your articles. No knowledge of Chinese is needed, as English is spoken throughout the office. This is an excellent placement for anyone with an interest in journalism! BUSINESS MAGAZINE - If Business is your interest and you speak a little Mandarin Chinese, you can work on a Business Magazine as their main Native English Speaker. This project involves writing articles in English and having them translated for the magazine, plus interviewing English speaking people for inclusion in the magazine. Mandarin Chinese is not needed for your work, but as many people in the office do not have much English, it's highly recommended. PHOTOJOURNALISM - Photojournalism Projects are available where you will take photographs for various magazines and stock photo sites. Some photography skills are required for this project. ACCOMMODATION: You will stay in a modern and friendly, central hostel along with the other volunteers. You'll usually have access to all the modern facilities you'd expect: internet access, a kitchen, TV, common room with DVDs, a security locker and a bar & restaurant on premises. The hostel is located in a lively area, where you will have the chance to meet other backpackers and travellers. There are many shops in the surrounding area if you need to stock up on anything, and the hostel is extremely close to Beijing's famous Sanlitun Lu - or 'Bar Street', where everyone hangs out in the evening for drinks and fun!
