Description: Join the Global Vision International research team and assist with important research on one of Kenya's most critical populations of Angolan black and white colobus monkeys. The base for this important project is set near the beautiful Indian Ocean coastline in Kenya. In addition to the Colobus monkey, you will also work with other wildlife including the rare Zanj elephant shrew and many butterfly species. Living within a traditional Swahili village you will be immersed in the culture and have the chance to explore everything that this wonderful area has to offer on the weekends and during your free time. Such activities include fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving, amazing beaches and safaris.

How this program makes a difference:

The East African coastal forest eco-region is the smallest Global Biodiversity hot-spot with the highest density of endemic vertebrate species. Facing the highest rates of extinction due to habitat loss, it is one of 11 'hyper-hot' priorities for conservation. Shimoni's colobus monkey rank amongst the top three most important populations in Kenya. The forest is also home to the critically endangered spotted ground thrush, Zanj elephant shrew and other vulnerable mammals, birds and plants. It is of immense cultural value, as well as a vital natural resource to surrounding communities, but lacks any form of protection. Supporting community initiatives offers the best hope of realizing conservation goals.
