Volunteer on Seal Conservation Programs in Turkey

  Turkey
    Adana

Dates: Visit our website for upcoming start dates

Description: The south east coast of Turkey, where this project is located, is rich in biological diversity. Join GVI on this marine science project and learn about the area's precious ecosystem while you help to implement conservation measures to protect the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seals (only 300 of which remain in the entire world!). Among the most endangered mammals on the planet, this effort to protect the monk seals is one of the more critical conservation opportunities around. As a volunteer on this project you will collect empirical data to support scientific research and track the influx of exotic species from the Red Sea as well as the effects of global warming on the Mediterranean habitat. You will learn extensive field skills and gain valuable hands-on experience in the field of marine biology while you study the behavior and ecology of these elusive creatures. Lend your support and help an initiative promoting eco-friendly fishing methods and help to conserve the seals in Turkey.

* How this program makes a difference:

GVI volunteers help the local scientists by providing much needed manpower and funding to keep their studies going. The scientific research is vital to the conservation of the Monk Seals, one of the most endangered species in the world, as well as to the preservation of the precious ecosystem and the efforts to implement conservation measures to protect the habitat. Working with the local fishing villages helps to offer the locals other forms of sustainable fishing methods and enables them to sell their wares to environmentally conscious consumers.
