VISFI: Farm Stays
US Virgin Islands
- Other Cities in US Virgin Islands:
St. Croix
Dates: Jan, Feb, April, Aug, Dec
Description:
Set deep in the moist rainforest on the Island of St. Croix USVI you will find a unique getaway like no other in the Caribbean. Visit the Creque Dam Farm, home of the Virgin Island Sustainable Farm Institute for an active and educational experience where you not only overnight, but you are immersed into a living-working farm community. * Volunteer and work with our farmers in fields of USDA Organic produce in the morning then enjoy the harvest served fresh on your plate. * Our local chefs will prepare three mouth-watering meals a day where the 'slow food' movement is at the core of our holistic sustainable systems approach. * Our farm has been granted the coveted Green Globe Certification and is completely off the grid. * We produce enough solar power a day to run our large community center and the collection of cabanas located throughout the 200-acre property. * Our farm community is trained in the practice of 'permaculture' where we not only provide a meaningful and sustainable agricultural product, we are sure to improve the resources that provide our existence. * All timber used to build our facilities is from Guyana and was personally inspected by our Master Carpenter prior to harvesting. The Guyanan timber provider uses only the most advanced techniques for sustainable forest production. * Water, an important resource on a secluded farm, provides our living needs and irrigation needs through a fresh water well, a small tilapia pond, and water catchment systems. * We pride ourselves on the ability to live as a part of nature, not apart from nature. This we call Beneficial Farming. Stay for a night or week. Volunteer in the fields or the gardens; feed the chickens and the rabbits; stroll the property or hike to beautiful Annaly Bay, Sunset Beach, and/or the Danish sugar mills; visit historic Frederiksted, Christiansted, and the rest of island for a cultural treat and better understanding of the deep rooted heritage 'in' the island; or just relax knowing that your time here is helping to make this small piece of the world a better place. * Farm Stays are offered January, February, April, August, and December * Room & Board: camping, quaint cabanas, and a luxury home are all available are various rates of USD 25/night and up. Stay 6 nights, get one free. Volunteer your time for a discount on our food package.

We are a group of professionals, academics, and researchers who collectively strive to provide active, exciting, and sustainable study abroad programs in the Caribbean, Central America, and South Africa. We offer unique, academic, educational travel programs with an adventurous edge. These programs are experiential and most are travel intensive. Each allows you to be immersed into the local culture, experience the wild and natural surroundings, learn environmental philosophy and practices, and earn college credit. It is our goal to create a global knowledge regarding culture, community, conservation, and stewardship for our future leaders and scholars. We are committed to the principles of sustainable tourism which includes education about the importance of our protected areas and wild lands, embracing the local community and culture of these areas, and treading lightly while we do so.
