Korcula to Dubrovnik Kayaking Expedition, Croatia
Croatia
Dates: June - October
Description:
The Adriatic Sea is at the center of Dalmatia's identity. From 1350 until 1806 Dubrovnik was an independent Republic and the leading merchant marine center of the eastern Mediterranean. Its boats were to be found in ports throughout Europe and were even mentioned by Shakespeare. Dalmatian fishermen invented many of the tools, such as the purse-seine net and the powerblock, and techniques employed in the global fishing industry. An excellent way to discover maritime culture of the Adriatic Sea is on a week-long sea-kayak expedition. The traditional support boats used on lifejacket adventures' tours, a gajeta falkuaa and a leut, add an extra dimension, providing a platform on which guests learn about the food, wine and history of the region. The boats' decks are also the tour's under-stars sleeping quarters. History and culture are not the only of Dalmatia's coast's attractions. Its hot summers and the 'bluest' sea on Earth allow for a relaxing vacation.

A sea-kayaking expedition including Marco Polo's birthplace, Grk and Plavac wines, a 13th Century monastery, oysters, salt fields and the Jewel of the Adriatic.

Lifejacket Adventures - Adriatic Kayak Expeditions's Mission Statement: Lifejacket Adventures offer unique expeditions of the Adriatic Sea Coast of Croatia designed around the region's traditional wooden boats. Sea-kayak on the turquoise waters surrounding Vis Island. Paddle under the UNESCO heritage-listed walls of Dubrovnik. Explore the retirement palace of Emperor Diocletian at Split with an experienced art historian.
The combination of natural scenery and cultural history makes this coastline one of Europe's premiere active destinations.
The maritime heritage of Dalmatia is tied to the wooden boats that used to sail the coast - but little is being done to preserve the skills of the old fishermen and boat-builders. We hope to share their knowledge during our tours.
