VISIONS Costa Rica
Costa Rica
- North Western Region:
San Ramon
Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: please inquire for dates
Description:
Visions offers teenagers opportunities for ambitious service work and cross-cultural immersion in the United States and abroad. We work with and for intercultural communities that lack financial and other development resources. Through service, authentic experience, and active exploration, we encourage new perspectives and dynamic learning. Your service in Visions Costa Rica is best understood in the context of cultural exchange and language immersion through service. Visions participants will have the opportunity to understand how Ticos approach the fine balance between human activity and the environment. You will experience the ecological, economic and social issues of small Costa Rican communities in which we'll divide our time. We will live together as a group in two different and intimate settings. The first portion of the program will be in Quelonias del Caribe with our gracious hosts Roberto and Maytsi Solano who operate a remote and small turtle protection effort on the Caribbean coast. We assist in beach patrols and help make improvements to the reserve such as building/renovating turtle hatheries, for example. The other portion of the program takes us inland to the village of San Ramon de Guayaba on the edge of Guayaba National Park. Projects there mix construction, renovation, organic gardening and farming, environmental restoration.
Highlights:
Recreation and exploration include rafting, jungle trekking, running a zip line in the jungle canopy, touring canals, to small towns, hot springs, waterfalls, organic farms and nature preserves.
