Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: every month
Description:
Be part of it with i-to-i! Our goal is to achieve 400yrs of combined volunteering all over the world by the end of 2008. So far we have achieved 325yrs which when broken down means we achieved the following: - Over 5500 children cared for on our community projects around the world - A minimum of 13,000 children and adults taught English in schools and community centres - Hundreds of animals protected including Turtles, Pandas, Elephants, Monkeys and more - At least 80 homes and structures built for families and communities in need - More than 8000 trees planted which are enough trees to offset the CO2 emissions of over 2,000 cars Ever wanted to learn to surf? Pour in plenty of crystal blue waters, a liberal pinch of golden sand, remove all tourists and bake in the sun for 24 hours and you've got the perfect recipe for a tropical paradise. The picturesque coastal village of Canggu remains largely ignored by all but the cleverest tourists and you'll only have to share the beach with the children on the project, who you will help teach. The kids won't be the only ones doing the learning though as free surfing lessons are included in the project along with enough free time in the afternoons to practice. TEFL certification is included in the price to give you a head start in the classroom, but we're afraid your success at surfing is totally up to you! Highlights:
What were the highlights of your trip that you couldn't wait to tell your friends about? "Everything. It was an amazing experience. Living with the family was particularly fantastic, as I was able to participate in ceremonies, and despite the fact I was only there for two weeks I felt like a local." (Laura Newton) With crystal clear waters and sandy beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see, Bali is an island of great beauty. The picturesque coastal village of Canggu remains largely ignored by mainstream tourists making it the perfect location for travelers searching for the "real" Bali. Traditional fishermen frequent the beaches, their nets strung out to dry in the sun, while local surfers take to the water. This is one destination where you can still revel in the traditional lifestyle and as you work at a local teaching project you'll have the perfect opportunity to do just that. Kuta, further down the coast, offers a very different experience. Here travellers can enjoy the lively pace of a bustling beach resort with shops, restaurants and art galleries around every corner. Kuta's pristine beaches and tranquil waters make this a great place to learn to surf and that's exactly what you'll be doing. This unique project allows you to combine a traditional beach holiday with a stint of worthwhile volunteering and it promises to be an unforgettable experience. As there are many great spots for surfing in this area, this is the perfect opportunity to combine teaching English with learning to surf! 3 surf lessons are included in your project, which will take place in Kuta during your first week. Following each 2.5 hour lesson you will have the afternoon free to practice. This should be sufficient to get you surfing on your own, so in you'll have a great way to spend your free time! Extra lessons are available at your own expense.

What kind of skills you need to go on this type of project: Volunteers at this project should have a genuine love of children and an interest in education. Volunteers should be patient, hard-working, resourceful, imaginative and willing to join in a wide range of activities. You do not need to be able to surf as 3 beginners lessons are included with your project. However, you must be a good swimmer. A fun and positive attitude will come in handy too! Important: It is vital to follow bathing advice at the beaches. Some areas are subject to riptides and strong currents and you should exercise caution, particularly while learning to surf.
