Description:
Rain forests, jungles, vibrant rice fields, and an incredible coast line are the majestic natural backdrop to our immersion program in Thailand. From Thailand's two largest cities ' Bangkok and Chiang Mai ' to the small towns of Nakhon Pathom and Mae Hong Son, we explore palaces, temples, canals, markets, ruins and sensational landscape by train, bus, bike, boat and foot. Our program begins with a few days exploration of Bangkok, and then a Buddhist monastery stay in Nakhon Pathom. After walking alms rounds with the monks, and talking with the monastery's abbot about the principles of Thai Buddhism, we travel to Mae Hong Son, a small village nestled deep in the jungles of northern Thailand, where we embark on a trek through forests, waterfalls, rice paddies and minority villages. Traveling on to northern Laos, we visit friends working in rural development, meet with community leaders, and work on local service projects. After a visit to Luongphrabang, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of Asia's loveliest cities, we re-enter Thailand and settle into home-stays. As we travel to these diverse regions, we'll learn about issues surrounding development, land use and conservation; practice new language skills; and meet with a variety of health, education, and government professionals. Our trip concludes after our journey south where we swim, snorkel and relax amid Thailand's island beauty.
