Description:
The island of Ibiza is well known for its idyllic natural beauty and endless sunshine, drawing crowds of tourists to its beaches each summer. However, all this tourist activity threatens the fragile ecosystem of the island with heavy environmental damage if measures are not taken to protect it. A community of environmental activists have responded to this need, and have built a model ecological center in one of the most beautiful parts of the island, both to house environmental education and research projects as well as to serve as a demonstration of the latest in sustainable ecological development. The center is entirely powered by wind and sun energy and recycles all its water. Volunteers have the opportunity to experience the unique lifestyle of the island and become a part of this international community of dedicated environmentalists through working side by side with them on various projects to maintain and improve the facilities, promote environmental awareness among visitors, continue to develop the alternative energy systems and permacultural farming installations. Volunteers are provided with modest, rustic housing at the center and three vegetarian meals daily.
Qualifications:
Participants should have an active interest in environmental studies/ecology, and strong desire to contribute to the international effort to protect the environment. Some knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not required.
