Kilimanjaro Venture
Description:
This Venture combines two development projects, climbing three of the continent's highest peaks and the Serengeti safari. Add in a camel desert trek, white-water rafting, walking with the Maasai and the idyllic beaches of Zanzibar, and you're sure to be charmed by the diversity of this remarkable continent. Cultural Orientation & Community Project Tanzania: (Weeks 1-2) The Venture begins on the foothills of Kilimanjaro, at the Mpingo project, where we spend two weeks assisting with ebony conservation work and strengthening the links with local schools, whilst developing our Swahili with an informal language course. The Expedition; Kenya & Uganda: (Weeks 3-6) The expedition starts with a five-day ascent of Mount Kenya, showing the mountain in all its variety. Continuing northwards towards the Sahara, we explore the desert on camels, in the company of Samburu guides. Turning south along the Rift Valley we visit the famous flamingo-filled soda lakes before crossing the border to Uganda. We board rafts for a two day white-water rafting descent of the Nile over big water, impressive rapids and an overnight camp on a mid-stream island. Across the more placid water of Lake Victoria is the N'gamba Island Chimpanzee sanctuary where we see the remarkable rehabilitation work the vet team have achieved. Community Project & Serengeti Safari, Tanzania: (Weeks 7-9) The Hisani community project supports women's groups and schools in and around the city. The work is "hands-on" and there's plenty of local interaction, especially if you've remembered your Swahili! Back on the road we enter the Serengeti via the Western Corridor and go on safari to explore this pristine habitat. Ngorongoro Crater, arguably the world's best natural Big Game amphitheatre, is the heart of Maasailand. We meet our Maasai guides and trek along the floor of the Rift Valley to their sacred mountain, Oldoinyo Lengai. Expedition, Mount Kilimanjaro & Zanzibar, Tanzania: (Weeks 10-12) Mount Meru is our warm-up trek and summiting presents the ultimate view of Kilimanjaro (5,896m), which is our final challenge. The going is tough but the preparation treks, route selection and acclimatisation will pay off when we reach the Roof of Africa! Well earned R&R on Zanzibar, which has a few surprises of its own, is the perfect place to end our Venture.
