AUIP Fiji Short Program (8 days and 3 credits)
Fiji
Term: Summer
Dates: May, June, July
Description:
Short (8 days/3 semester credits) experiential educational program (May, June, or July) to study Fijian culture, village life, and its rainforest and coastal/marine environments through field activities, classes, and projects. Get ready for the stunning white sand beaches, colorful and bustling towns, coral islets, rugged interior mountains, tropical waterfalls, remote villages, and ancient archeological sites of the Fiji Islands. We explore the relationships between Fijian cultural practices, conservation of the natural environment, and eco-tourism. Despite several centuries of outside contact and a unique ethnic mix, traditional Fijian values and customs still flourish today. Our program is 3 days in the capital of Suva at the University of the South Pacific followed by a 5-day field study which includes 3 days on the Yasawa offshore islands, where we will explore marine and forest biodiversity (through treks and snorkeling) as well as participate in everyday and feast-day Fijian village life. Some additional pre-departure directed reading and independent study is required. Since several major airlines offer a free or inexpensive layover in Nadi on the return flight from many destinations in the South Pacific to the United States, this program is designed as an optional extension for the AUIP short programs in Australia and New Zealand although it is also open to all students.
Highlights:
* Earn 3 semester credits in a variety of course options. * Students from all majors are encouraged to apply, as we take an interdisciplinary perspective to explore the connections between people and their natural environments. * Study under knowledgeable university faculty and professional field guides. * A diverse range of field activities and excursions, such as snorkelling and hiking, are included in the price. * Activities and excursions relate what you have learnt in the classroom to the field. * AUIP will work directly with students and advisers in ensuring credits are transferred to your home institution. * Teaching assistants will provide tutorial assistance.
