Description: Many say that Oaxaca (wa-ha-ka) is the cultural heart of Mexico. Your AT group will hike through remote mountain villages as you traverse the Sierra Norte Mountains. The remote but cosmopolitan Oaxaca City charms you with its cobblestone streets, beautiful cathedrals, busy markets and friendly Oaxaqueros. This is a city of great culture. Salsa lessons, cooking classes, conversation class and Spanish lessons allow us to learn a part of the language and culture that can only be taught by local Oaxaqueros. We find that these hands on activities give us an opportunity to acquire Spanish easily. You further your newly acquired Spanish skills with your home stay family. We will explore another side of the Oaxacan culture as we work and play with the children of the Monte Alban community. These 4th, 5th, and 6th graders have very little material possessions and almost no exposure to the outside world. They are hungry for your friendship. We will jump rope, play soccer, give an English and geography lesson or two, and develop friendships that will change the way you view your life.

Qualifications: Many of our participants have never been on a wilderness program or traveled internationally. No experience necessary. All we ask is that you come iwth an open mind, a desire to try new things and ready to have fun. Our instructors teach you all the skills one step at a time. Call for details on specific programs.

Broadreach Summer Adventures / Academic Treks's Mission Statement: Broadreach offers experiential summer adventures for teenagers and young adults including scuba, sailing, marine biology, academic and wilderness programs that span the globe. Broadreach's educational adventures provide opportunities for students to learn new skills and explore the world in an active, hands-on environment that fully immerses the participant in the experience. Academic Treks is the academic adventure and community service division of Broadreach Summer Adventure Camps for Teenagers. Our educational summer camps and high school study abroad programs provide excellent alternatives to traditional summer camps and summer school. Lastly, Academic Treks College is the university division of Broadreach Summer Adventures. Our college study abroad programs provide unique opportunities to study a single topic in multiple countries around the world.
