Care for Orphaned Primates
South Africa
Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: All year round
Description:
Situated in a nature reserve bordering the Kruger National Park, C.A.R.E. (Centre for Animal Rehabilitation and Education) is the only baboon rehabilitation centre in Southern Africa. While the centre is open to all animals in need, the center specializes in baboon rehabilitation and at the moment houses around 500 individuals. Typically, a baboon infant is handed over to the centre at a very young age due to being orphaned. Babies are cared for by volunteers and staff, and when reaching the right age are grouped with peers that are to form troops to be released back into the wild when 5-6 years of age. Volunteers are involved in all aspects of the work. They prepare bottles, bottle feed infants, play with infants and youngsters in baby "nurseries", clean cages, and, if a release is under way, may help in the release. Volunteers love their stay here, often stay longer than planned and/or come back for more visits. Join us and be part of a very fulfilling and worthwhile conservation work.
Highlights:
while not strictly an adventure tour, C.A.R.E. is situated within a game reserve and is often visited by wildlife such as warthogs, wild baboons, elephants, giraffes, bush buck, impala, etc. Furthermore, the game reserve borders the Kruger National Park.
Qualifications:
Volunteers need not have any specific qualifications as long as they have a great love and compassion for animals and nature. While we can not guarantee that all individual volunteers turn out to have a natural flair" for baboons, we will make good use of all personal characteristics and skills. Volunteers need to be dedicated to the work they are to perform.
