Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Visit the GVI website for upcoming start dates

Description: Are you looking for an exotic African expedition a little bit different than the rest? Why not join GVI in one of the most beautiful and remote parts of Madagascar and work with local villages and Malagasy biologists on this award-winning scheme. Eighty percent of Madagascar's wildlife is unique to the big island, but it is in danger of disappearing. There is extreme poverty in Madagascar, and also a high rate of population growth which is pushing development further and further into the animal habitats. This program focuses on local needs, with project work in three diverse categories: sustainable livelihoods, health and sanitation, and environment. It provides volunteers with the opportunity to get involved in a variety of different work, including building projects, wildlife research, teaching positions, and promotion of eco-tourism, while being immersed in the fascinating Malagasy culture.

How this program makes a difference:

Madagascar is one of the highest conservation priorities on this planet. 80% of its plant and animal species have not been found anywhere else, but poverty poses an enormous threat. 70% of the population is below the poverty line and have little access to clean water. In the last five years teams have increased access to clean water and sanitation, planted trees to aid reforestation, built schools in remote areas and helped to set up income-generating projects like beehives and vegetable gardens.
